Modiflow 060

MODIFLOW 060 is a polymer specifically designed to improve the characteristics of bentonite.

On a molecular level, bentonite is a flaky material by nature, consisting of tiny sheets. It belongs to the phyllosilicate mineral group (sheet silicate minerals). When bentonite is added, the sheets will absorb water. The mixture will change into a thick liquid. The bentonite sheets float freely throughout water with a structure resembling a loose house of cards. When added to the bentonite mixture, the polymer attaches to the sheet edges. When a sheet edge touches the flat side of another sheet, they immediately attach to one another, and they are more or less connected. This changes the loose house of cards into a connected structure as soon as the pumping motion is interrupted.

  • The static carrying capacity (gel strength) is enhanced, keeping loose soil from flowing back down when pumping activity is interrupted.
  • During recycling, the connected card house structure is easily broken down, which allows for easier cleaning of the drilling fluid.
  • Plastic viscosity is barely increased, meaning the drilling fluid remains easy to pump at high viscosity.
  • Fluid loss into the formation is sharply reduced thanks to high gel strength.
